Smithville Communications is looking for a detail-oriented and safety-focused Utility Locator for our Jasper, Indiana, location. The locator will identify and mark buried fiber lines, helping prevent damage during excavation and construction work. This role involves managing routine and emergency locate requests, making field-based decisions, and supporting safe, accurate utility marking.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Locate and mark buried fiber facilities using specialized equipment, paint, and flags
  • Read and interpret blueprints, as-built drawings, and GIS maps
  • Prioritize and complete routine and emergency 811 locate tickets
  • Troubleshoot locating issues such as weak signals, damaged tracer wires, and changing field conditions
  • Communicate with contractors, homeowners, businesses, and internal teams about utility markings and job-site conditions
  • Document field uncertainties, outdated maps, and other relevant details
  • Support after-hours locates, joint utility work, and mapping projects as needed
  • Follow 811 laws, utility marking standards, and jobsite safety requirements
WHAT YOU NEED
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Utility locating or telecommunications experience preferred
  • Knowledge of 811 color codes and jobsite safety practices
  • General construction knowledge
  • Ability to read GIS maps and engineering drawings
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing conditions
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Close, distance, color, and depth vision required
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check 
WHAT IT’S LIKE
This is a field-based role that requires working outdoors in a variety of weather and site conditions, with time also spent driving between locations and handling administrative tasks. The job involves regular walking, standing, bending, and occasional lifting. Overtime, evening, and weekend work may be needed to respond to urgent locate requests or meet business needs.
